"I don't think people are born artists; I think it comes from a mixture of your surroundings, the people you meet, and luck." ~ Francis Bacon
"I always think I don't do the first one good, so I try to do it more." ~ Andy Warhol
"If people knew how hard I worked to get my mastery, it wouldn't seem so wonderful at all." ~ Michelangelo
Art, like everything, requires practice, practice, practice! The heart of drawing really is about hand/eye coordination and sculpture includes material and skill competencies that are often found once you've gained familiarity with what you're doing. In the art room most of the projects are first tries at something and so it's stressed that everything we work on can be better with a second, third, or thirtieth try.
The art curriculum includes lessons designed to focus on learning a specific skill or a concept, such as the elements of art. Both skill building lessons and lessons inspired by an artist or concept will also involve looking at relevant art and artists, and learning how to critique and discuss them. Vocabulary is a very important part of learning about art and relevant terms will be continuously introduced and used in the art room. As well, learning to discuss art will be used in peer critiques in the art room. Using constructive criticism, students will be challenged to assess each other’s artwork by taking into account effort, craftsmanship and execution, concept, and personal taste. Critiques also mean that we’ll talk about exhibiting artwork and deciding "where your art should live".
